Craig or Cav?

Postby lanterne rouge » Mon Sep 26, 2011 9:25 am

I know it's ridiculous but ......

If yesterday's two big winners, Nick Craig and Mark Cavendish, had ridden the "other" race, who would have finished in a higher position?

I'll start by suggesting that someone of Nick's experience would probably have been able to sit in the bunch at the Worlds (assuming he didn't have to work on the front for Cav - who wouldn't have been there as he'd have been in the Peaks), while the thought of Cav carrying his bike up the Peaks creates a wonderful mental picture! I don't see him finishing in the top 50.

Perhaps Cav would like to ride the 50th race next year to prove me wrong.

I cant imagine Cavs chunky sprint legs liking running up hills so I go with Nick.

Cav would finish in the top 50 IMO. He is a full time professional athlete.

He doesnt get a lot of credit Cav and many people say he he cant get over hills, load of tosh. He can and does it year in, year out in the Tour, Giro and Milan San Remo. He doesnt get up them as quick as the GC riders, but still gets up. Cav is a very intelligent rider and not many people give hin that credit.

The 3PCX is a hell of a race with technical climbing & descending, but IMO Cav's fitness will get him through it and he would make up time on the roads.

Craig. Well, the guy is a legend and I love watching him and I have watched him many times this season. He is one of the nicest guys in cycling, always has time for people and is a good laugh. He rode great yesterday.

In the Pro Peloton how would he do? IMO He would stay with people in the neutral zone and do ok but its a different game. Its a game of taxies and teamwork, Craig is a solo rider always has been. IMO he wouldnt of come in the top 150 places. Yesterday the race in Denmark was 300km IIRC with a 20km neutral start point (280km "race" in total) a brutally long World Champ!

IMO Both great Athletes that dont get enough credit in our media.

Chapeau guys and thanks for making myself and many thousands of fans happy.

Absolutely. In no way was I disparaging Cav. He'll get my vote for Sports Personality. I was just being mischievous! Next September let's see Cav defend his world title and watch Nick take on Rob Jebb in the Peaks.

What I would like to see is Sven Nys or Lars Boom have a bash at the 3Peaks. I saw Sven Nys at Dalby earlier this year and he didnt like the technical parts at all really, so would be interesting to see how he would get on.

Oh and how good did Paul Oldham look in the Nationals Jersey, good to see it doing the 3 Peaks :)

It would be brilliant to see a top Belgian in the race. Boom would probably be riding the world road race on the same day, but Nys is unlikely to have that excuse! My money would be on Jebb or Craig still.

Agree about Paul Oldham, and he really wasn't very well yesterday making his result even more creditable.

Earlier this year I invited Helen Wyman to ride in the 3 Peaks. She said that she could not make it this year but would consider riding in the future.

How about inviting Lance Armstrong over - he likes his off road stuff these days.

Regards Cav - I did the etape du tour this year (the alpe d'huez stage). I finished in 5hrs 38mins and the winner did it in 3hrs 44mins. In the actual race Cav cruised over the line in 3hrs 38mins, six mins quicker than the etape winner and all that with nearly 3 weeks of the tour de france in his legs. Cav can climb incredibly well in the grand scheme of things and would certainly surpirse a few people in my opinion.

Great idea - I bet he'd not be far off the top ten. The only problem would be that the entry fee for the mere mortals would probably have to be £1000 to pay Lance's appearance fee!
