I'm sure others can provide a more detailed answer, but my advice would be to find the biggest, steepest hill you can legally take a bike up, stick a bike on your shoulder and go up it as many times as you can before September. Then you're sort of prepared for Simon Fell!

Richard is spot on, if you can't find a long hill find a short steep off road one, run up it with cross bike on shoulder as fast as you can then freewheel back down it to recover ( and get some descent practice ) then sprint back up again, repeat until you have climbed the equivelent of Simon Fell or you collapse whichever is the earlier.
It has worked for me, got some strange looks from the local dog walkers mind you :o

as they said, that'll get you ready for Simon Fell, so there's just the rest of Ingleborough, and Whernside, and PyG to train for! oh, and the road bits too...

In my experience, you just can't get enough training in for this event!
You need to concentrate on your running, bike handling skills, endurance, the list goes on.
Just run a lot and ride a LOT!

I have got 5 components in my training plan - started last week!

Running - intervals up a big/steep hill and some general running if you don't do a lot
Endurance - you need to keep going on PYG as this is where you can really suffer, get some tough 5hr rides in
Upper body strength - if like me you do nothing but ride a bike, you need to work on your arms/shoulders etc ( descending still hurts like hell!)
Speed - intervals on the road/chaingang so you can catch or keep with a group on the road sections
Off road riding skills - find the toughest/rockiest trails you can find and ride them on your cross bike

Good Luck!
Only one year missed since 1996 - I'm afraid that If I don't come back every year that I'll never race the Peaks again!

Hi

Lots on my blog if you look about - particularly under the 'training' label here.

In very short summary: 3 peaks training

*Good base (steady miles / hours)
*High Intensity (Reps)
*Course Simulation (Rocky technical riding, fast road stuff, walk-ups and run-ups)
*Keep weight as low as possible.

I can remember meeting Chris Wilkinson (72 winner) at ribble head viaduct, and then run the race route up Wernside and down to Chapel le dale. Then carry on up the old route to the top of Ingleborough, down to Selside, and then back along the main road to Ribble head.
Running fell races is a great way to get fit for the peaks but a bit late now to start.
