Training event

If you are looking for testing off road training event there is the Mary Townely Loop mountain bike challenge on Sunday 19th September. It can be done on cross bikes and indeed has been done on cross bikes many times. Its a real tough challenge which as its only the week before to 3 Peaks some may say too close !....It involves 47 miles of riding with 6300 ft of climb and with only a couple of short exceptions is all rideable. A good time would be around 6hrs although it has been done in some ridiculous time, like under 3.5 hrs....I have done it in just over 5hrs and that was pushing on for me !
Our club (Rossendale Harriers) used to organise it but it has now been taken on by the Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team and full details can be foung on their website. You can enter on the day and registration and the start and finish is at Fearns Community Sports College on Booth Road Rossendale and it starts at 9.00 am. They have several drinks/food stations around the route and I can highly reccomend it........I will be having a go even though it only the week before.Lefty

The Mary townley loop was suggested to me. But with only a week before the event I'm wondering wether I should ride it or take it easy. As a 3 peaks virgin (one of those beer in, brain out moments  ) I'm more used to riding around a wooden track. Is it a good idea to ride the MT loop so soon before the 3pks. I'm doing the training so should be ready for the 26th.

3 pks virgin !!!!

For the last few years I have tried to get a similar gnarly off road ride in either 1 or 2 weeks beforehand - I think it is ok as long as you take it easy in the week before the 26th!
It is essential to ride some proper off road on the cross bike to test the equipment if nothing else!
Good Luck
Only one year missed since 1996 - I'm afraid that If I don't come back every year that I'll never race the Peaks again!

I agree I ride my Cross bikes around the so called mtb red routes(and have raced on them)! thats a sure fire way so sort any failures out that will and do happen
Will be testing my new build around Winlatter at the weekend ,
The old Alans are great light frames
but mine has taken to many drop offs so need to know if can still take it!!
