waterproof or not

Postby clint eastwood » Thu Oct 04, 2012 7:40 pm

at the start,I opted to wear my waterproof over 2 racing jerseys and a vest, thinking thats what everybody would do,but not the case, even though it was actually raining and 20 mins to go.Anyway by the time I descended whernside,I was soaked through and showing signs of moderate hypothermia, shaking uncontrollably ,but still made
it to the finish in about 5 30.So had I made a mistake of wearing that top or not,or wasnt I quite tough enough.Or was it possibly the extra time, being not as fit as some, I was actually exposed to the elements.

I think it's a personal thing.
Knowing your body well and how your body will react in such conditions.
As you say the higher work rates produce more heat and also get you off the mountain quicker...and therefore influence what you would choose to wear.

I wore gilet over 2 decent base layers. I was fine until the whernside descent, and after crashing i suddenly became very aware that I was starting to lose it. So then made a conscious effort to ride hard & grabbed a wind proof. It certainly tipped back into sanity despite still feeling cold.

I think we were all right on the edge... First time I've ever experienced anything like it.

been talking to some x service men today, and it seems by the effort being exerted going up ingleboro, actually had me boiling in the bag and not what i thought, that the coat was letting the rain in,so when i hit the road, with the wind chill hitting me,I began to freeze.actually the effort going up penyghent warmed me up again, only to freeze again descending.

Wore base layer, 2 jerseys + gilet type w'proof from start. Thought I may be overdressed (!).
Got very cold on the way down PyG, nudging on hypothermia probably (had a dry waterproof with a helper on PyG, but foolishly neglected it). Indebted to all the guys at the finish who bundled me into the shower with a cuppa.
Loved every minute.
