10-speed XT with 105 Shifters.

Has anybody tried using an 10-speed xt cassette and rear mech with 105 10-speed shifters?
I've just converted my cyclo cross bike to the above set up but I'm having problems, I can only use 8 out of the 10 rear gears.
I'm now thinking that the 2 systems are not compatible, and that i will need to convert to flat bar with thumb shifters.
Does anyone have any experience of the above?

My conclusion after testing the set-up again this morning is NO, they are not compatible. The 105 rear shifter does not produce enough cable pull to move the rear Xt mech across the full 10 cogs, it moves about 8 cogs. Therefore flat bar 10-speed thumb shifters must produce more linear cable pull per click than the 105 shifters do per click.

Hi,

Are you using the XT or 105 mech? It might be possible to use the 105 mech with the XT cassette... mechs are geared for the shifter pull but cassettes are standard widths.

I was using a new XT Rear Mech, which definitely didn't index correctly with the 105 Shifters. I've changed it back to my old 105 Rear Mech now and it works fine, except it can't cope with the large 11-34T Cassette (which is the reason I put the XT Rear Mech on). It will index across to the 30T cog so I might settle for that, being able to use 9 out of the 10 gears. Then I could re-set te stop on the rear mech to make sure I don't accidently mangle the rear mech into the 34T cog!!!

i presume this occurs on the small ring - i.e. it is a mech issue, rather than chain length?

If it is chain length then you might be ok on the small ring in the 34.

I'm also thinking of trying this with my Ultegra SL so pleased to hear of your experiences!

It is the rear mech that is the issue, the chain length is fine. The upper jockey wheel of the rear mech clashes with the 34T cog.
I'm going to test it properly this week, if it index ok across to the 30T cog (the jockey wheel gets very close to it) i'll live with it, it's better than my previous 12-25T cassette.

I set up a bike for a friend this week and it works...........

i use a 2009 10 speed Ultegra shifter, a 2011 10 speed 11-36 XT cassette, and a 2010 9 speed SLX rear mech,and a new 10 speed chain of course, all i did was shorten the outer cable after removing the old ultegra rear mech, installed everything else, and Boom! it works perfect................

Oh wow, that's an interesting one Tricky, so the 9-Speed Rear Mech works fine with the 10-Speed Shifters, does it index all 10 cogs consistently ?
I could rob the 9-Speed Rear Mech off my mountain bike????

yes it works! my boss ripped his ultegra rear mech off last season, and we put an XT shadow rear mech on, and it worked, so after finding out that they work with 10 speed shifters, AND have a capacity for 36t, then, after reading this......

.....we tried it, and its perfect, my only problem, is i run SRAM, so i have to work something different out for me, but as its my first 'peaks, i think im going flat bar anyway, so will just use MTB shifters......

Just ordered XT 9-Speed Rear Mech off t'internet.
In my opinion, for what it's worth Tricky, you are going the right way with a flat bar set up. I wanted to do the same but it was becoming too expensive, my cross bike doubles as my winter training bike, so to change it over to flat bar/thumb shifters for one race was getting a bit silly.
