What do you reckon to this setup

Postby Darkmarkster » Tue Jan 04, 2011 9:51 pm

I've always done road sportives but I want to try a few cyclocross events so I scouted around and found a Scott Team CX frame on ebay in good condition and I plan to do the following build:

Im trying to factor in some reasonable gear but keep costs down at the same time.

Frame: Scott Team CX 56cm off Ebay

Shifters: Purchased Ultegra STI double 6600 shifters.
Rear mech: Purchased 105 5600 10 speed rear mech (short cage)
Front mech: 105 5600 mech,Although I havent bought this yet
Crank: Sram Rival 172.5mm (same crank lengths as my road bikes) 38-46T
Handlebars: Ritchey WCS Logic 42cm purchased already
Wheelset: Will be purchasing Fulcrum 7 CX wheelset,
Seatpost: Ritchey WCS V2 31.6x400mm
Brakeset: Still trying to decide between Cane Creek SCX-5 or Tektro 992AG Oryx Cantilevers.
Cassette: Shimano Ultegra 6700 11-28 or 11-25
Chain: SRAM PC1071 hollow pin chain
Pedals: Crank Brothers egg beaters C 2010

I know a lot of people dont agree with mixing SRAM/Shimano components but I've never experienced any issues and it keeps costs down.

Do you reckon this setup would be ok for the 3Peaks? After all I am actually just aiming to finish the ride :P

I fully agree with johnpoi - CR720 (or 520 a bit cheaper & no discernible difference) are brilliant. Hang on tight when you first use them, bloomin' powerful! :o

As for gears, I've got 38-46on front, and think the 38 could do with being a bit lower (36 or 34? not sure if these would actually work with my front changer. tips welcome.)

I agree the CR 520 are a cracking brake and the price is right I have these on two of my bikes and just cant fault them
You shouldn't have a prob with you front mech you just might have to slide it down a touch
presuming its a clamp on

Absolutely agree with sweeni on the top mount brake levers and gearing. Whenever I get a new cross bike I always ask Paul Milnes to put on a Pen-y-ghent gear!
